Capitol Gains

Advocacy is a skill like any other, and 471 SkillsUSA students, advisors and state directors from 31 state associations put it to work at the 2026 Washington Leadership Training Institute, Sept. 26–30. After days of training on the SkillsUSA Framework and CTE policy, students met face to face with their senators and representatives to make the case for career and technical education and Perkins funding. The week also welcomed WorldSkills USA competitors fresh from Shanghai and closed with 297 members earning the SkillsUSA National Statesman Award.

Make48 SkillsUSA 2027 team applications are officially open to the SkillsUSA network, and we'd love for your students to be part of it! Feel Free to share this with your network!

New to Make48? We're a national product-design competition where student teams take on a real challenge and race to invent, build, and pitch a brand-new product. It builds creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving in the best way possible — fast, hands-on, and unforgettable.

Here's what it looks like for SkillsUSA chapters: your teams apply now for a spot in the SkillsUSA + Make48 Competition, held live at SkillsUSA NLSC 2027! Selected teams earn their place to compete at NLSC, where the whole experience is filmed for our TV DocuSeries on Roku.

Here's what you need to know:

  1. Applications close October 31, 2026

  2. We're taking only the first 40 applications, and spots are already filling; some have been claimed by our early-access schools since August, so apply soon to grab yours

  3. The sooner your teams apply, the better their odds

Check out the videos below to see what's ahead:

Application Highlights:

  1. Team = 2-3 students + 1 teacher/advisor

  2. You'll need your SkillsUSA chapter number

  3. You'll come up with a team name and upload a fun team photo

  4. Tell us who your favorite Tool Tech is and why

  5. Share the skills you've gained through SkillsUSA that give your team an edge

  6. Time to shine — your big creative moment, a 60-90 second video! We're not looking for a talking head reading a script. Get creative, show your team's personality, and make your case for why we should pick you. Film in your shop, run a demo, act out a skit, make us laugh. Show us, don't just tell us. Upload your video to YouTube as Unlisted (not Private, or we won't be able to view it) and paste the link in your application. Lights, camera, personality!

The Process:

  1. Our crew reviews every application as it comes in, selecting from the first 40 teams.

  2. Top teams get a call: Before we announce, we'll reach out to our top teams by phone to walk through the final details of their selection. Once everything has been discussed and agreed to, we move forward with the official announcement.

  3. December 1, 2026 — Competing Teams Announced: We'll announce the six teams who advance to the Regional Play-off competition.

  4. The Regional Play-off takes place at the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference (NLSC) in June 2027. You'll register, plan, and pay for NLSC as you normally would. Please note: teams competing with Make48 will not be able to participate in any other competition at the SkillsUSA NLSC.

Feel free to share this with another SkillsUSA teacher!

We can't wait to see what your teams create.
